El fútbol que hoy conocemos nació hace más de ciento cincuenta años en las Islas británicas, un lugar donde también vieron la luz algunos de los artistas más importantes y reconocidos de la historia de la música, así que no resulta extraño que fútbol y música, quizá las mayores manifestaciones culturales y sociales del Reino Unido, mantengan numerosos vínculos y lugares de encuentro en la cuna de Bobby Charlton y Mick Jagger.
Hay quienes se han inspirado en el fútbol para nombrar a sus bandas; Kaiser Chiefs, por ejemplo, hinchas del Leeds United, toman su nombre de una de las grandes estrellas de los Peacocks en los noventa, Lucas Radebe, que comenzó su carrera en el club sudafricano Kaizer Chiefs. Otros, como Elton John, llegaron a ser presidentes de club (Watford FC) e incluso himnos, ya míticos, como el “You´ll Never Walk Alone”, del Liverpool, tuvieron su origen en éxitos de la música popular, en este caso en la canción que Gerry & The Pecemakers popularizaron en los sesenta.
